Dali . . . The Head Honcho! Dali is a funky Silkie White Rooster with a sweet and docile personality. He is very personable and is a family favorite. He keeps busy protecting (and mating) with the hens. Dali’s favorite treat is bread — he goes berserk when he sees it! When he is foraging in the yard or when I throw him a treat, Dali makes happy clucking sounds! He is hilarious! He is so gentle and likes to be held and petted.
Guinevere is a mix breed of Rhode Island Red and New Hampshire Red. She is very pretty with dark black markings on her back and smooth silky feathers. She is a proficient egg layer of large to extra-large eggs. She is sister to Ginger.
Ginger is a mix breed of Rhode Island Red and New Hampshire Red and a prolific layer of large light brown eggs. She looks almost identical to Guinevere, except she does not have black markings on her back like Guinevere and her feathers are a duller brown. They never go without each other and they are at the top of the pecking order. Although Ginger is friendly around humans, she tends to be quite dominant around the other chickens.
Garretta was a Barred Rock hen with a spunky personality. She laid large brown eggs 4-5 times a week. Her eggs usually had little raised bumps on the surface. Her name was originally Garret because when she was young, I thought she was going to be a rooster. However, Garret turned to Garretta when she started laying eggs!
Cinnamon is a mixed breed of Rhode Island Red. She has deep brown feathers with black-tipped feathers at the tail. Both she and Saffron were not very personable when they were little and are still a little skittish. However, they are easy enough to pick up and hold.
Saffron is a mixed breed of chicken, though I’m not sure exactly what kinds. She is a mix of two heavy breeds, maybe Buff Orpington and something else. She is light brown with white-tipped tail feathers and white streaks on her neck. She is very pretty. Like Cinnamon, she wasn’t very personable when she was little, but now she sometimes lets me hold her. Cinnamon and Saffron are inseperable. They cry out when they are apart from each other even for a minute. 🙂
Our Former Barred Rock Roosters:
Caspian is a Barred Rock rooster who likes to show people who’s boss! Caspian has a very loud crow and was always a bit feisty — sometimes pecking my feet and hands. He even chased me across the yard once! We had to bring Caspian and Galileo back to the farm we bought them from. We did not want the neighbors to complain about the crowing. Caspian and Galileo are brothers.
Galileo is a Barred Rock rooster. He has the most beautiful teal and copper colored streaks on his back. He is a tame rooster who, when was small, had a very pathetic crow! We nick-named him Pasty Butt when he was little because his poop would stick to his bottom!
In Memory:
Rosebud was the cutest, most docile Silkie hen I ever did see! She was small and white — so easy to handle and cuddle. She loved bread just as much as Dali and I would always hand feed both of them because they would always be the last to the treats. I got Rosebud when she was about six weeks old (along with The General and Garretta) and she lived to be about nine months old.
Richard was a Silkie hen (yeah, I know it’s a boy name) who was very docile. She was a bit slow in the head, too, which made her even more lovable. She was always the last one in the coop at night and always slept on the ground rather than on a roost. She and Dali were brother and sister and they followed each other around everywhere. Richard lived to be about five months old.
General Gow was a Barred Rock hen who layed brown eggs 4-5 times a week. I called her “my awkward chicken” because she sometimes jumped off her roost at night, causing a little unsettlement in the coop. She also used to make these weird deep noises when I tried to pick her up. Like Garreta, The General was a bit shy of humans, but very sweet. She lived to be about ten months old.
Clarence was only here a short time — about a month — before she died of sickness. We were not certain of her gender, but she acted like a girl. She was very docile and loved to be held. She was the favorite of the chicks and I miss her even though I only had her for a little while.
